"How many days of school are left?" "I can't take this stress anymore." "I need summer." With this being all I hear anymore from friends and classmates, I started thinking about what summer means to me. To some people, summer is three months only useful for sleeping in and not having to stress about schoolwork. Don't get me wrong, these are some of the things I look forward to and anticipate too! However to me, summer is more than just freedom from school.
First of all, the summer weather makes it such an enjoyable time of year for me. With the sun rays beating down on me at the pool, or the warm, peaceful nights around the fire, how could you not agree that this weather is perfect? The bright sun during the summer days not only keeps me warm (unlike the -20 degree wind chills we have now) but it also improves my mood. Unlike the dreary and dismal feeling of rain, the sun rays peeking from the puffy white clouds in the blue sky instantly put me in a happy mood. The bright colors of the flowers that surround my house, being able to see my shadow on the driveway, the crystal clear water in my pool, all of it. The little things like this are just some of the weather related things that put a smile on my face during the season.
I also love summer because it's a lot of fun! Who could disagree? With three consecutive months to enjoy and spend however you like, the possibilities of things you can do with friends and family is endless. How I spend the majority of my days, until the tennis season begins in mid-July, is relaxing on a raft, listening to music and attempting to tan (which in my case, does not work). Some of my favorite summer memories are when I went to the Taylor Swift concert and when my best friend and I went to the Trumbull County Fair. I'm sure everyone can recall one fun thing they've done last summer. Whether it's vacationing, playing a sport with friends, a barbecue with the family, or eating ice cream along the poolside, everyone most likely can name something fun they've done one summer.
My point is, summer is not just about a getaway from school and responsibility. Sure, not having to stress about homework, finals and essays sounds amazing to all of us right now. Also, catching up on sleep sounds just as heavenly. But to me, summer is a time for fun, friends and positivity. Without the warm weather, the positive atmosphere or the joyful memories, summer wouldn't be the same to me.
Natalie, I really loved your blog post! I completely agree with everything that you stated in your post. I really liked that you started your blog with a few quotes because it caught my attention, and I could relate to them because I find myself saying the same things quite often. I too believe that summer is more than freedom from school. It is a time for positivity and freedom, and it gives you much more time to be with your friends and just have fun. You really used your voice in this post to truly show what summer means to you and I thought it was very well done. I really enjoyed reading this blog post and it made me even more excited for summer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you also. I loved your use of descriptive words, it brought back some nostalgic memories of the summer. The description also helped for me to envision what you meant and what it looked like (it's kind of hard to envision the thought of the warm air, since we have had an everlasting winter). By the way I think we have 55 days of school left not including the weekends. I agree with the fact that summer isn't just three months without school it is a time to relax and enjoy our time. The pictures that you used were a nice additive because it put a personal touch and shows what activities you enjoy in the summer.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog post this week Natalie as it is very, very pertainable to the thoughts of mine and every other high school student living in this cold, dreary atmosphere. I couldn't agree more with your point that summertime isn't just a time to get away from school and the stress that comes with it, but rather the time spent with family and friends, in addition to just having some time to relax. You also talked about how the summer makes things happier and lighter in a sense. I thought that was very accurate as well because when I went outside today, it was "heavenly". We haven't had this kind of weather since last October, and it was nice enjoying the outside today without the worry of being frostbitten or bundled up in multiple layers. Getting back on topic to your post, I think your build of pathos about summer and your personal experiences made me and the rest of your audience relate very well to our feelings about it. I'm excited for this summer! It's our senior summer and I'm anxious to make and share a few more memories before our time in high school is out. In addition, like you mentioned in your post, I just can't wait to get out of the cold, enjoy relaxation, and have our entire atmosphere around us be much lighter and much more enjoyable than it is right now.
ReplyDeleteNatalie, I absolutely loved your blog post! I could relate to so many of your reasons for why summer is something to always look forward to. Your use of imagery when describing the flowers outside of your house and seeing your shadow really help to show your audience how deeply you feel about summer. I do agree with you that summer is not only a time for catching up on sleep and having no homework to do each night, but to be with friends, family, go on vacations, go to concerts (like Taylor Swift) and so much more. How you use your own personal experiences and memories of summer really grab my attention and I can relate to you so easily. I too cannot wait for the warm sunshine to hit Ohio and stay here for a good long while. Also, your rhetorical questions got me thinking of even more ways of how summer is more enjoyable aside from having no school related things. Just think, only about three more months and we're off into summer!
